W9 Alternator up grade....2026-08-28

One-wire Delco alternator.....
Top Mounting Bracket supplied by "YT."
Bracket is from a universal alternator kit, and is not tractor-specific.
Top Mounting Bracket, happens to position the Alternator drive pulley inline (pic is not a true representation of the belt alignment)with the W9 factory Generator drive pulley....

Material ( BLUE outlined )was added (welded) to the mounting bracket to facilitate a second cap screw.
A casting / protrusion ( BLUE in Color )design (1" Diameter X 7/16") was removed from the engine block, to allow the alternator to position as close to the block as possible when installing the V-belt. This allows for a very short V-belt..
Hood does not come in contact with Alternator.
Engine oil filler CAP WINGS lowered (ground ) so as not to come in contact with lower alternator bracket
Engine coolant was drained,as lower water pump cap screw was utilized to attach lower Alternator bracket.
Cap Screws, and DRIVE BRIDGE was removed to allow the short V-BELT to slip over the water pump drive pulley.
The FAN BLADES are too large for the short v-belt to be installed.
Once the alternator V-belt was positioned on the generator drive pulley, the fan assembly was replaced.

Radiator was NOT removed.

Engine was started, and the alternator immediately indicated a charge on a new AMP METER.

Looks like a good job! I have never attempted to install a Delco 10SI on a Mc..W4/Farmall H. Did your assessment and preliminary planning suggest that it is impossible to mount the alternator rotated 180 degrees in terms of its mounting ears. I think I have heard of it being done without a hood modification, however it requires the correct belt that tightens up and hold the alternator very close to the valve cover and with very little ability to tension the belt more if it stretches. Your approach definitely limits access to the oil fill.

Yes:
I was unable to design any bracketing so as to rotated this large Delco 180 degrees in terms of its mounting ears.
Lack of any foundation to attach a bracket/design and the area from the top of the Ignition system/Hydraulic pump is very congested...
My measurements and calculations would have seen the Delco protruding somewhat from the engine Block,as well the HOOD would have been compromised as in Clearance.
Then again, quite possibly,I may be guilty of missing something that is obvious.
When I had to dismantle the complete Fan /Pump drive to install the very short V-belt..........*&$#%&**&^%........I did not give up or have tantrum.
I treated my oversight as a mature lesson not to do again.
Possibly because my wife was holding the Flashlight...........

Whoops, for some reason I thought you were working on a W4. I am pretty sure a Delco 10si will fit turned upward more like the generator was mounted in an W6/M, I would also think it would work on a W9. On an M the original generator bracket is turned upside. Because of the angle of the bracket this lowers the alternator and tucks it in a bit closer to the engine.

I also see a lot of the H hoods with a big hole cut in them , but I got one put on my father inlaws H without cutting it.

W9 in her work cloths...
Unfortunately, the Engine BLOCK in the W9 has a different loction to add Engine Oil than the WD9.

The WD9 left the factory with an ideal location for the Generator / Alternator mounting BRACKET........NOT so with the W9......I'm able to place my hand between the alternator and the Hood........

Have put the 10si on several H’s. I build and idler pulley assembly and place under the alternator. Allows me to keep belt tight and fits under the hood perfect.
