88 diesel out of time by one tooth on the plunger gear

Looking for opinions from PSB pump guys. My 88 standard has the injection timing advanced by one tooth on the plunger gear. must work out to an additional 10 degree of advance. How is it able to run like that?

That’s correct. That mark is only used to time the head to the pump
 
The HUB /pointer mark and the GEAR mark DO NOT line up. It's NORMAL to see the gear one tooth away when the HUB mark aligns with the pointer. The head is installed with the tappet on the BASE CIRCLE of the cam, the hub PORT CLOSING is with the tappet PART WAY up the cam lobe, AWAY from port closing.
 
When the white mark on the crankshaft pully is at 12:00 the flywheel is positioned at the FP mark. The position of the white mark in the photo is with the pump hub lined up with the mark. As seen through the 3/4" pipe plug hole. Hence, the reason I believe it is advanced a further 10 degree.

Hmm. When the pump is timed correctly the flywheel should be lined up on FP (or very close), the pump drive hub should be lined up with the pin (through the 3/4 plug hole), and the head gear should be 1 tooth ahead. If you don’t have this then something is messed up. Is it running poorly or something? Why are you looking at timing?

When the hub mark is aligned, and you can SEE the gear mark pump is ready to fire on cylinder one. When the hub mark is aligned and you DO NOT see the gear mark pump is ready to fire on cylinder SIX, as pump turns CRANKSHAFT SPEED, but the hydraulic head turns 1/2 engine speed like the engine CAMSHAFT does. The critical timing is done at the HUB, NOT THE HEAD GEAR!
 
Newly aquired tractor for me. Wouldn't start, I discovered govenor control rod nut was backed off, looked as if it was ready to fall off. I set it to where it started & ran decently, however soon discovered that the nut would back off on it's own while engine was running. Fixed by coating control rod threads with JB Weld once I got it set again. It will start if 75 degree(lots of smoke while cranking), but at 60 needs ether. Anyway I found a Roosa Master pump off a 1650 and am going to retrofit, hence the reason I'm checking out timing on this pump.
