Can a Case 830 diesel run a 535 baler in a pinch?

I bought a John Deere 535 baler, and am getting ready to do hay. I was supposed to get a 1086 international from my father-in-law that I was going to use to run it, but something came up and I’m not sure if I’ll be able to get it home in time to get my hay done. My main tractor up until this point has been an 830 case diesel.

I know people say the horsepower req for the baler is 75 PTO hp, and the 830 is only 65-68hp depending on who you ask, so a little shy. My land is fairly flat with only the one end of the one field having a slight hill. Im wondering if the case would be up to the task in a pinch or if I should try to look for a tractor to borrow? Would lowering the bale size/density make a difference?

I think your baler is 5 ft yes? I pull a 4 ft Vermeer with a Case Farmall 65 and it does just fine. It is about the same horsepower as yours but you've got a heck of a lot more tractor than me,,, weight. Of course making the bale lighter would help. I would love to have an 830 Case to bale with. You would have no trouble pulling that baler.

JD 530 rd baler operators manual states 55 pto HP as minimum. Tractordata.com shows JI Case 830 belt HP at 66 HP. I think Case 830 should be fine to operate a JD 535 rd baler.

Several yrs ago when AC was not working on my JD 4255 I pulled my JD 467 rd baler with my Kubota M7040 with no problems making '64-66' diameter bales.

I pull my caseih 3650, 5 by 6 round baler with my caseih c80 and no problem, I think you should be ok.

I say try it, if it bogs down, down shift. You can always get by some way or the other.

Baled a lot of hay with Oliver 1655 and 535 deere baler. You should be fine with the Case 830 plus you will get to experience the great out doors with the open station with a tail wind

They really were gutsy. Uncle had one. Pulled 4-16 plow. Problem with plowing they weren’t geared right. Fourth was to fast and third was to slow. He realized he should have bought either 5 bottom or 3 bottom as 3 he could have plowed in fourth gear and 5 bottom he still could have stayed in third.

But on that round baler it will really shine.

We used a JD 4320 when first starting to round bale in the 1970"s with an old gehl bale. I vowed to never again bale without a cab tractor and my wish came true when my son bought a JD 4230, which he still has. Lots of hay cut back and forth north and south. Sometimes the dust and dirt was so bad we would bale against the wind, dead-head back to the other end and bale into the wind.. What a waste that was.
