Wondering about the time you say they transitioned to your SSN.
I enlisted 7/21/71 (Navy) and we were given Service numbers.
It was on our dog tags and we had to stencil it along with our names on all our clothes in boot camp.
It was within just a few months after that they went to your SSN.
Mine was D819058
I asked google gemini "When did the US military transition from a service # to your SSN?.
It returned the following:
"The transition from Service Numbers to Social Security Numbers (SSNs) across the U.S. Military was authorized under Department of Defense Directive 1336.1 and rolled out in phases by branch between 1969 and 1974:
July 1, 1969: U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force switched to the SSN.
U.S. Department of War (.gov)
January 1, 1972: U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps transitioned to the SSN.
October 1, 1974: U.S. Coast Guard completed the final transition.
Starting in late 2011, the Department of Defense phased out the visibility of SSNs on ID cards and dog tags, replacing them with a 10-digit DoD Identification Number (EDIPI) for routine administrative and identification purposes. "
