This works 100 percent we did it on bearings the diameter of a garbage can

How it works I’ve always wondered since heat should expand it. If it just expands enough to loosen? Or if as it cools it pulls in the angled part of the race? Didn’t matter to me the why I guess but it worked.

Cold was how to install out of the freezer overnight to shrink which always made more sense to me.
Yes the initial weld tries to expand, but the cooling draws the weld and race in. Professionals often use liquid nitrogen to shrink parts.
 
I suppose like most things the weld bead could be overdone and expand race enough to carck housing. 😲
Never say never, but I have seen a lot of welding build up put on bearing races with no cracking of housings. If a lot of welding build up is done, some of the heat transfers to the housing and can cause some housing expension.
