On August 17, 2010 there was a post about attaching a gas tank to the hood on a John Deerte H. PBrowning gave a great reply which included the note "Best fit of the caps" he stated that "...some filing to widen the tank flange notches may be required to achieve "the best fit of the caps""---what does this mean and what are the tank flange notches?

Because of appearance issues, Pat Browning was concerned that when mounting the fuel tank assembly to the hood that the filler necks of the fuel tanks were centered in the holes of the hood, especially the fore-aft positioning of the tank assembly. He suggested making those notches in the weld flange of the tank longer in case the hanger straps spot-welded to the inside of the hood weren't positioned properly which might create interference with the tank - so he suggested making the notches longer (if necessary).

Thanks Dan--That was very helpful. The picture shows the "notches" which looks to me that they are just folded over metal to hold the clip (B1441R) in place while tightening the carriage bolt (2H306R) to secure the tank in the hood. How can you file anything to make the "tank flange longer"? I don't see any notches in the strap that is spot welded in the hood. Otis

Well, it turns out that I was looking in the wrong place for the "notches" (like a dummy). I think I now got the picture thanks to your drawing. Otis
