6V Starter Conversion To The Faster 12V Starter

I'll give it a go when I locate someone with a cast steel Funk starter nose for sale. This article just mentions converting regular 6 volt Flathead starters.

Every 6V starter motor I've seen will also run on 12V, and faster.

You can use the original 6Volt starter. 12 volts spin the motor fast but really slams the drive into the ring gear. That’s the only complaint I have for 12 volt conversion. I used a volt meter instead of ammeter and I am pleased with it. One wire alternator kit from this site.

I see what the original poster is getting at. A dedicated 12volt starter spins much faster than an original 6 volt starter with a 12 volt battery. A good example I have is the 12 Volt converted Funk. The rebuilt starter is noticably slower spinning than a higher compression V8 or late model inline 6.

Running my original 6Vstarter on 12V with no issues however as Jim in LA pointed out it does hit the ring gear harder as the 12 volts will spin the motor up faster before it's loaded.

Can't speak for the N tractor starter, but for a Flathead V8 you can definitely use the Stator (case) from a '63 390 T-bird which was 12V with the Armature (shaft) of an 8BA V8 starter which was 6V to create a 12V Flathead starter. It worked great until I got a mini-starter.
