thanks Dan! I have everything but spring #5. Previous owner used mechanics wire in its place! As I see it, foot pedal does nothing more than bend the throttle spring to increase speed, then throttle does not return to speed it was before using foot throttle. It moves the throttle control on steering support also! Does that sound about right? This is all new to me, never had a foot throttle on a two cylinder!
No, the foot throttle will not move the hand control throttle lever from its set position.
Keep in mind that “The purpose of the Accelerating Pedal is to make possible faster travel speeds to and from the field and for transporting purposes. Under no circumstances should the Accelerating Pedal be used for field work.” (statement taken from an early operator’s manual which uses the term “Accelerating Pedal” in lieu of foot throttle) The intended use of the foot throttle is to increase the normal governed high speed from 1400 RPM to 1800 RPM, thus giving the “H” a “fourth gear”, and it is not intended or designed to be used at lower engine speeds or to substitute for the hand throttle control.
Referring to the parts illustration below, when the engine is running at low idle speed and the hand lever is set to (let’s say) the wide-open throttle position, the carburetor will open completely until the governor works against the #31 single-leaf spring and closes the carburetor enough so the engine will run at governed high speed. Then, if you wanted, you could reach down and pull the #32 governor arm to the rear a little bit which would open the carburetor a bit more and that would result with increased engine speed. By doing this, you are effectively helping that #31 leaf spring by increasing the total “spring force” against the governor.
Essentially, that is what the foot throttle is doing. That #5 spring is of a critical size and design and will exert just enough additional force when the foot throttle is depressed (in addition to the force of the #31 single-leaf spring) to slightly override the governor to result in an extra 400 RPM of engine speed.
When the foot throttle is released, the spring force from spring #5 is eliminated and the governor has to work against only the single leaf spring #31. The spring #6 is not a critical size or design – it simply keeps the foot lever in an “off” position against its fixed stop to ensure spring #5 is totally relaxed if the foot throttle is not depressed.
Some trivia – the patent for this foot throttle states in part: “It is sometimes desirable to operate the engine at a higher speed than the maximum permitted by the governor as, for example, when transporting the tractor over the highway, or otherwise operating under light load, and with this in mind, it is the principal object of the present invention to provide adjustable means, under the control of the operator, for regulating the throttle or other speed regulating means to accelerate the engine up to the maximum speed of which the engine is capable for any given load. One of the advantageous features of my invention is that it is possible to accelerate the engine momentarily for a burst of speed without disturbing the setting of the governor adjustment, and the normal operating engine speed is automatically resumed upon release of the engine accelerating means.”
