Ford 861D starting issue

Ford 861 Diesel won't start after major overhaul.

Does a “major overhaul” in your terms include the timing gear cover was off and the cam etc.. removed? To a lesser degree was the injection pump removed. Was it a running tractor prior to the overhaul? Maybe a better question is how long since the injection pump ran an engine?

I'm with used red, WHEN did the injection pump work last? When they set unused awhile with ANY traces of water in fuel, or bio diesel some internal parts will be stuck and no longer work to get fuel to injectors. I repair a lot of pumps for this trouble. Do you get ANY white smoke from the exhaust during starting attempts? If so, then fuel is getting past injectors but compression heat is too low. The CRANKING speed can be causing this also if the starter armature is rubbing the field coils do to worn/dry bushings.

Yes. The engine was completly removed, disassembled, cleaned, inspected, and repaired or replaced parts as necessary by a professional mechanic. He has not been able to get it to start. The injection pump was removed and serviced by a respected company that has been in business locally for decades. The cylinder block was bored (+10), the head was completely overhauled with all new parts and a complete valve job. All external compoments (oil pump, water pump, etc.) were replaced with new devices.

No. The tractor was not running before I purchased it. It had sat in a barn, not moved since 1980.

I was asking about whether it was running before or not thinking that you were trying to run the engine with a pump that sat unused for a time. The following negated that.

Is the mechanic familiar with working on diesels and bleeding air out of fuel injection system? No smoke while cranking to start is an indication that no fuel is getting into the cylinders. Sorry if I am calling out the mechanic but we don’t know him from Adam, any information we have about what is keeping your tractor from starting has to be relayed to us by you. Unfortunately there is no magic bullet to solve this we just have to work through it. Do the lines at the injection pump spirt out pulses of fuel when loosened when cranking?

Sounds like it is time for him to call another professional mechanic to figure it out paying for it out of his pocket.

If I was your mechanic I would have done this before I ever told you I couldn’t get it started.
