I wonder what the possibilities would be for switching over to propane. In August I started the new “budget plan” through the provider for my mom’s home we rent out in Kansas for 700 gallons at $1.69 a gallon. I realize that bringing in a 500 gallon pressure tank and having a place to set in is a bust at some places. I also realize the delivery and supply “infrastructure” may also not be in place in some areas. I also don’t know what the cost of converting a fuel oil heating system to propane would be. I also don’t know how close a gallon of propane comes to supplying the heat a gallon of fuel oil produces.

I did look after he divulged what seems to be a “highly secretive” item here on YT, his location. It shows the average propane price in New York State as $3.06 per gallon, but showing some out state area’s somewhat lower. That does probably make the costs of conversion less appealing. It does show that tank delivery propane is available in his area.

Akin to cattle production
You cannot just flip a switch to drill more wells

Rigs are expensive an not just setting around in an operational state waiting for work

Be a fool in this market to spend the millions to put one together in hopes it holds

However, many trucking companies have substantial discount deals with the big truck stops. When i was traveling, I had a discount card that worked at most of the big truck stops. I think it was 10-12% discount but I don't remember for sure. Also that is the credit card price, probably another 3-4% discount if you pay some other way. So the price in this case certainly could have been way under $6.00. The mom & pop across the street probably has a more realistic price.

Station across street is chevron gas station. Has diesel. Their price was $5:99. Loves cash price was $6:14.

A 10% discount off $6 fuel is still $5,40. That's still insane! There's no way to defend that. If heating oil barrels start getting filled in October, folks are still going to be on full boil when they go in the booth in November, if they can afford gas to get to the polls.

For discounts on diesel fuel, everyone look up TSC fuel cards and Open Roads fuel cards. A person would have to have a bulk tank they can haul on a truck if they wanted to fill a home tank though.
I had one of those cards when we were traveling in our motorhome, saved up to 59 cents a gallon.

In round numbers, propane has about 2/3 of the heat per gallon compared to #2 fuel oil, plus the efficiency of a new propane furnace is probably higher than an older oil furnace, your $1.69 is probably about the same as $2.25-$2.50 fuel oil. The big problem with propane is that code often restricts how close a 500 gallon tank can be to a building, it's often better to put in several smaller 100 gallon tanks

I think a natural gas system you can convert with new spuds

I don’t believe a heating oil furnace is the same I think it’s a whole new heater.

The coop rents you the tank for a dollar per year here

We combo it with a pellet stove to take the edge off I had been considering a corn stove as our old pellet stove is 10 years old now and was just a cheap farm store brand

The pellet stove is the easiest to setup but you do have to load it. Barring running a feed auger directly above the hopper (I’m not allowed) for most people that means carrying it in from a bin or bags.
