New to this forum. I recently rebuilt a 1973 Massey Ferguson 135 engine. The engine is AG3-152, 3 cylinder gas Perkins. It has a Spicer Dual Drive Clutch on the flywheel. I ordered a new 11” disk for the engine to transmission, and also a new 9” PTO clutch disk. I had the flywheel resurfaced at a local machine shop and they did a beautiful job. They removed .030” to get the flywheel looking like new. There was a .030” spacer ring between the flywheel and clutch mounting surfaces. The machine shop man told me to leave that spacer out when I install the clutch back onto the flywheel which I did. So now to my problem. This is actually the first time I have ever messed with a clutch. I understand how they work and I also understand how the dual clutch drive is supposed to work, with that being said, before I disassembled the clutch I took a picture of it with my cell phone just for future reference. So my problem now is the engine runs great, and I can step halfway down on the clutch pedal and release the engine to the transmission clutch disc. Allowing me to shift gears. However, when I stepped down all the way as far as the clutch pedal will go, I am unable to shift the PTO shaft into gear with the engine running at idle speed. The only way I can engage the PTO is to shut the tractor off, and as it is idling down, I am able to pop the lever over and get it to engage. So with the transmission in neutral, and the high low range lever also in neutral, when I start the tractor, the PTO shaft is obviously turning. However, when I step down all the way on the clutch pedal, as hard as I can, I am unable to get the PTO shaft to stop turning. I thought that I may have inadvertently put that PTO clutch disc in backwards, with the hub facing the flywheel. So I had to split the tractor again to verify that I did not make that mistake. The PTO Clutch was installed just like it came out of there. If you look at the picture of the clutch assembly, that is how that hub was facing before I touched it, the hub, which I believe is a little bit longer on that side, was facing the rear end of the tractor. AI says the PTO hub should be towards the flywheel?? I didn’t make any adjustments on the three bolts on the fingers that RIDE on the throwout bearing. The only adjustment that I did make was on the three bolts on the flywheel that push up against the pressure plate for the PTO clutch. I adjusted those to .090” ,like the book said. I would greatly appreciate any input on where I went astray, and information on which way the hub on the PTO clutch disk is supposed to be facing. No guesses!
