Off duty that day from the emergency response team . Taking son to his first day of school. Placed tape in VCR. Recorded 2nd impact live , horrible. Knew the towers were going to collapse but they fell hours sooner than I expected. Security was tight getting into work the next shift in.

It was an incredible stretch of gorgeous weather here in NY we were having. Wife and young son and I were building a grain bin. She went to the house mid morning to fetch snacks and heard the news. I didn't believe it, having recalled the WWII bomber smashed against the side of the Empire State building. But it was true. The jets disappeared into the buildings, the resulting fire weakened the inner frame work, and the terrorists probably couldn't imagine being so successful.

In the office at the nuke plant writing a training lesson plan. Being a nuke and central Va we locked the doors.

Driving to work. Stopped at a diner and watched a tower fall on live tv.

I was in Arlington Va.The company I worked for had just finished the renovation of that wing of the Pentagon. All new elevators and escalators. The Inspection and load tests were scheduled for Sept 12. We had finished the install and all our constructors had been moved out. The inspectors had not yet arrived The wing was to be opened on the 13th so only the cleaners and a few who had sneaked past the barricades to get an early look were in that whole section. About 25,000 people work there so I can't imagine the crash in another wing. I was working nearby. I heard two explosions, one when the plane hit the ground and one when it hit the building. The thick smoke was visible for miles. It burned for days. The terrorists had managed to hit the most deserted building in Northern VA. 125 souls in the building and 65 in the plane. All phones were running at capacity and calls were not getting through. I finally got to call home to say I was ok on a copper line.

Driving to town to go to work at my job at the local Farmer's Union/Cenex. Heard the news on the radio in my 82 Cutlass diesel coupe.

Getting ready to head to work. Drove the 30 miles to work, and the line crews and office staff were in the bull room, with the TV on, quietly watching the disaster unfold. Managment told the crews that if they felt distracted, to postpone any dangerous jobd, or go home.

Where to start? We were building new perimeter fences around two 40s here on the home place and needed a fencerow cleaned up before we started on that one. One of the guys who was going to work on that project was in the barn waiting us to get done milking so I could take him out and show him what needed to be done, so I didn't have the radio on. Jordan was here recharging the A C on the 4040 Deere so I could start filling silo.

When we got done milking, I went out to see how he was coming along. He had the door of his van open and had the radio on. He asked what I thought about the plane hitting one of the towers? I said I didn't know what he was talking about. My first thought was a small single engine.

My wife came in the house and turned the television on and came back out looking shocked and scared. She said it was an airliner and one had just hit the other tower. Dave and I got in the pickup and went out to look at what he needed to do. He was as scared and nervous as a little kid on his first day of kindergarten and I wasn't much better off. We came in and spent the next hour or more watching TV, but had to suck it up and go to work.

Driving to work down Valleyview Lane in Irving and I noticed there is not the usual amount of planes coming in and landing at DFW. Prior to then I had not had the radio on so I called in to the crew and found out what was happening. i was the maintenance manager of a large data center and not knowing if the entire nation was under attack we came off-line and went on our big diesel generators. Other data centers in dfw area did the same.

37chief I was on my second day of a 2 week vacation from the American Airlines Maintenance Base in Tulsa. Was home and TV on and heard of the first building being hit by an airplane. Thought it was accident till the second plane hit. The United one. First was a 7-6-7-200ER American Airlines plane. Could have been one I worked on 11 years earlier in Hanger 5. I was in component shop at that time and a number of parts I worked on were on that plane. Lynn

He was put to death exactly 3 months earlier on June 11th

Driving home after completing night shift which put me on I-287 northwest of New York City by about 25 miles. I was listening to the news in my truck and heard the first report of a plane hitting the North Tower and I sort of envisioned a light plane hitting the tower but why? Then the news came in and by the time I got home the story developed. Little did I know that my friend Paul Tegtmeier, FDNY, was one of the first fire fighters on scene. His remains have never been found. My compliments to US Navy Seal Team 6 and supporting cast. God Bless America.

I was a Sophmore at Michigan State University, sitting in my dorm room with my roommate when he got a call to turn the tv on, that the first plane had hit the towers.

I was working for an insurance company in Lincoln, and shortly after 8:00 that morning, (9:00 New York time) I had just sat down at my desk and taken a phone call from an auto repair shop in Brooklyn, New York. While we were talking business, a bunch of yelling broke out in the background. The fellow said, “Let me see what’s going on”.

When he came back, he said an airplane had hit one of the World Trace Center towers, but they didn’t have any details as to whether it was a military or civilian airplane, accidental or intentional. We continued out business conversation and he gave me an occasional update.

Then after I got off the telephone I learned an airplane had also hit the Pentagon. As it happened, our daughter, Amy, was living in Washington DC at the time and worked as the Multimedia Manager at a Border’s bookstore in Pentagon City, a few blocks from the Pentagon. I tried calling her store and the line was dead. After a half hour or so I got a busy signal and thought, “Well, that’s progress”. Shortly after that, I got through to an operator at the store. Corporate in New York had called and told them to close the store. Amy had ridden the Metro to work that morning, and as the Metro was shut down and traffic gridlocked, Amy had simply walked home with a co-worker who lived within walking distance of the store. I called my wife and we both breathed easier.

About noon, Amy got through to me on her cell phone. As it happened, I was on another phone call at the time. But, the Claims Manager knew the situation and held Amy on his phone until I got off the line.
It was an interesting day.
