1020 died: on the right track?

Tried to start the other day. Hit 4 or 5 times then died. No signs of life since. Fully charged battery. Good spark at plugs. Seems fuel related. Have good flow to carb. Pulled drain plug and got fuel out. Pulled inlet strainer and its clean.

Which brings me to this. I've been led to believe this is a solenoid to stop run-on when shutting down. 12v to the solenoid. I Pulled it and can't verify that anything happens when its powered. After I put it back in to stop fuel flow, I thought I expected to see a needle plunger of some sort. The end looked to be just a hollow tube. Is it possible that this isn't working and floods the carb?
Any thoughts appreciated.

As you can see, I keep it in museum quality so anything is possible.

You should hear a click when you put 12 volts to it. And you should see a pintle valve retract towards the coil through the holes by the mounting gasket.
Is that a JD price? I was expecting the price of ASAP to be less. I didn’t look at it when I took the screen shot, went back to the page and sure enough $250. Looks like another case of legalized robbery.

No click [ I also expected one]. I may pull it off and bench test but nothing when powered and 12v to it.

Can I just blind it w/ a plug or does it actually perform a metering function?
It is the control for the main (load) jet. It or a manually adjusted needle needs to be there.

With your carb number you can get a manually adjusted needle set up to replace it. I don't see one listed, but YT/PartsASAP should have them for your carb. I used to get them from McDonald Carb & Ignition, but he shut down shop at the end of August. Many carb shops have them.

John Deere part number RE19406 may be the right adjuster for your carb.

Yes, there's a metering function. From what I've read you can try taking the spring out of it and see if it will run.
Some you can, some you can't. The original ones that can on them you could swap the position of the needle and spring to bypass the electric solenoid, then use the thumb screw it had on the end to manually adjust it. That one looks like a replacement, without the thumb screw.

Isn't the purpose of that solenoid to shut off fuel as soon as the ignition switch is shut off? Otherwise those engines would run on like a diesel.

In this picture it looks like the solenoid is unplugged.

They put them on to reduce the "after run" with hot engines when the key was turned off. In general, if the manual needle is adjusted right and not dumping more fuel than actually needed and one gives the engine a couple minutes at idle to stabilize, run on is not much of a problem. The quick shutoff while the engine is coming down from running at a higher rpm underload is when it generally appears.

A high price could indicate that part could soon be discontinued from JD. The high final price lets the company write off a higher amount when they are disposed of.

Other tractor brands used similar solenoids, are they still available from other sources?

Last I checked the price of most all those solenoids was north of $150, all most all sources.

Follow up.
First, thanks for the input.
I pulled the solenoid and its dead. 12 v to is shows continuity but no movement or click or nothing. I actually expected it to be an open circuit but its not. It may be the plunger is fouled.
At any rate, I'll order up a manual unit and go from there.

By the way, when I first pulled the solenoid but didn't shutoff the fuel, I simply plugged it w/ a bolt. She fired a couple of hits telling me the solenoid is bad, shutting off fuel, and now she's flooding.

Carb tag reads: TSX-9049L
66D

Thanks again.

Well, that shouldn't have worked. I figured nothing to lose so I started fussing w/ the solenoid. A shot of carb cleaner and it operates as intended when powered. I know I've just bought time but I may get my tractor running until the manual needle arrives.
Thanks again guys. I appreciate it.

Good enough. It will probably last for another 20 years.... Ha.
