Will a 148 bolt into a VAC?

Before a I waste a bunch of time on this. anybody know if a 148 out of a first gen 480 bolt into a VAC?

Not without extensive work, but it can be done, but not easily, a totally different bell housing pattern, similar shape but much smaller. Then there are starter and flywheel issues, the 148 flywheel will not go in a VAC bell housing.

Early 430 had a 148B engine, 3 bolt starter and larger lower end than 148 engine.

SO if I happened to have a good engine out of a totally junk 480, what should I be looking for to put it in?

RG, the engine you have has a 3 bolt starter which started with the 30 series tractors, a 30 series bellhousing will fit the older rears without any problems. So it could be used in the 00 series with that swap. I think I am right on this, so I'm gonna put it out there, I know the 3 bolt engine will bolt to the early bell pattern, I believe you could HeliCoil the engine starter holes to 3/8 NC and use short bolts to mount the starter.
