H Farmall low and high setting for charging

Can someone explain what goes on inside the switch, when you go from low to high charging with the switch? Mine is in poor shape, but just wondering if I bypass the switch and go to High Charging all the time, what do I have to do? Straight to ground, thru a resistor, or what? Thanks

By design, low charge grounds the field wire through the resistor. High charge grounds it directly. The resistor, when in the circuit, reduces field current so the generator output is less. You can bypass all the switch control by connecting a short jumper from the F terminal of the generator to one of the cutout mounting screws on top of the generator.

Just beware if you leave your charging rate on high, you can overcharge and cook your battery if it's charging too fast for too long.
The "normal or most used" position was supposed to be low, high only being used in certain instances where the battery was draining fast and not getting recharged enough on low.

Here it was always on low unless working (when) at night. Then flip to high charge and hope it kept up.

If you want to hard-wire the low charge rate, run the jumper wire from the generator F terminal to the usually unused FLD terminal of the cutout. We ran most of our tractors on high charge most of the time. We had a lot of low-speed work. The only major exception was when working fields in the spring.
