Another sm brake adjuster question

Is the ball shaped piece that goes on the adjuster bolt supposed to pivot inside the brake pedal?
Mine pops in and sits tight on the flange. I'm guessing it's time for a fresher brake pedal?

Also, are the pinion bearing retainers the same on the sm through 450?

Pedal socket and ball need to be free to pivot or the pull rod will be bent back and fourth breaking it from fatigue. Check IH part numbers and interchangability on the retainer Messicks diagrams should help.

My uncle's idea was to put the pedal in a vice, heat up a washer red hot that fits over the end of the ball, and drive it into the socket as a spacer.
I'm sure the socket is worn out, too.

Thats what I suspected. Talked to my uncle yesterday, his idea was to heat a washer red hot that fits over the tip of the ball, and drive it into the pedal with the pedal in a vice.
I think the socket is worn out. It bent the adjusters when the ball and spring were new.

From head of adjusting bolt a washer goes on then the spring, then ball type piece with two jam nuts after it one nut is tightened until spring is compressed to 1-3/16 inch then jam nuts locked in place. then another jam nut goes on to tighten against yoke after adjusting free travel of brake pedal. Adjusting bolts have threads cut longer than a regular bolt. If pedal travel can't be adjusted so bolt doesn't bend the internal brake parts can also be worn to much other than the pedal. Yes, pinion bearing retainers are the same.

Thanks. I measured the disks, they're about halfway to the minimum thickness.
But like I said, the ball sets so deep into the pedal that it rests on the flange at the spring end.
To get the right brake working, I had to put a stack of washers between the head and spring to pull the slack out of everything, with no nuts anywhere.

Sounds like I need to find a fresher pedal and a set of retainers and go from there.
Thanks

If ball goes in pedal deeper than picture, pedal or ball is worn too much. If not worn actuator or housings. In some cases the pinion bearing retainer needs ground even along with drum and then width of drum reduced so actuator doesn't need to spread to far. If actuators look serviceable, best to use two need brake discs and put them in actuator, then a straight edge across and see how much space is between shoe and straight edge.
