JD 535 balerSome idiot ran twine pump low on oil m. What now?

And yes the idiot is me. First time using the 535, I changed the hydraulic filter on the twine pump without filling so the system ran low on fluid. I feel like a moron. Here I was wondering why it isn’t tying.

So first question, what are the chances I’ve ruined the pump running it low on oil?

Second, I found an operators manual online and it talks about how to bleed and run the pump without a bale. I just want to verify I lift the gate all the way up, lock it with the lock valve, and then move the use the tractors gate control “down” until the belt tensions on the twine pump and then force oil through the system by blowing air into the reservoir with a rag to pressurize it. Do I have this right?

Any other suggestions other than RTFB?

Yup, that's how you bleed. And also how you cycle the arms if you ever need to without a bale in the chamber (normally they need the bale to be at least 30" diameter before the belt running the twine pump will tension up enough to drive it, but that gate lock trick is a way to tension the belt with no bale in the chamber).

I'd just fill it, run it, and see what happens. May be just fine. But if you did happen to ruin it, it's no big deal. For those twine pumps on all those 35 series balers, JD used the power steering pumps from late 80's/early 90's Chevy/GM pickups. Available from places like RockAuto or Amazon dirt cheap and easy to change. I can't remember exactly what year range of and models of Chevy used those, but I'm pretty sure they were from S10's/S15's. Proper practice is to also use the relief valve from your old pump as it's a lower pressure than what Chevy used. Lots of discussions on other forums online talking about it will give you more details. Here's one I found right of the hop:

I suggest after filling filter & pump reservoir to open twine arm speed control valve fully open(CCW). Counts number of knob revolutions so twine speed can be more easily reset after twine arms cycle. I always using tailgate lock valve on LH side of baler lock gate closed. Using tractor scv control lever to raise tension arm in baler similar to opening rear gate. When 3+ is visible in bale size window with engine operating @ pto speed pto engaged pull rope & twine arms should move. If twine arms don't move I suggest to blow compressed air at lower psi in short bursts to help force oil into pump. Also if pump happen to not pump oil follow instructions in red box in photo below.
