245 Massey Gear Stuck

Hi, I have a 245 Massey Ferguson. Yesterday, as I was bush hogging, I heard a tapping/knocking noise. I pushed the clutch in and lowered the throttle and the noise stopped. I checked to see if something was caught in the fan, and I checked the oil and hydraulic fluid. Everything seemed fine, so I resumed bush hogging. Then the tractor got stuck in Reverse and Low. I forced it in neutral by pulling the shifter extremely hard. I put it back on gear but the tractor wouldn't move. It would rev up a little when I let off the clutch, but there was no movement.

I read all about these tractors getting stuck in gear and how you could access the gears by the transmission fill plug, so I took the plug out to investigate, even though I had already forcibly unstuck the gears. Everything seemed lined up and I could see everything shifting just fine by looking into the hole.

I messed with it for a good bit, moving the gears around, but had no luck. I gave up for a while to do some more research. I went back later, got on it, and it went in gear just fine so I drove it into a shed where I could work on it easier. I have no idea what the problem is, but there is a spring around the Shift lever that I can clearly see through the hole. The spring isn't doing anything, it's just sitting there, loose. I feel like it came out of the actual lever and fell down, but I have no idea really. I'm attaching a picture of the spring.

I think that spring should hold the shifter down. A piece may have broken off and lodged in the gears creating your issue. Sounds like it worked its way out. I believe you will need to split the tractor to gain access to make the repair. Others will arrive with more knowledge.

Thank you, this is my same thought. But I should be able to do it by removing the transmission plate instead of breaking the tractor in half. But this is annoying lol

I do know that in order to withdraw the sifter shafts you need to split.
