How do I prime an Allis-Chalmers 180 Hydraulic Pump?

I replaced the rubber boot on the lower intake side of the hydraulic pump. I was thinking that the old rubber boot was my issue with poor pump performance. Now I can't get it to prime. I tried squirting compressed air into the tank while I started the tractor, but it's not picking up the fluid. It seems most of the air is being released through the gear shift. Does anyone know a good technique to prime that pump?

If you have air coming out around the shifter, you are pressurizing the wrong fill hole! You must have put some oil in the correct hole???

Hmmm.... There is a right side and a left side. I read that the right side is for hydraulics, but maybe I am wrong. Are the 2 sides connected also? That would explain a lot.

If it's the same as a 185 left is hydraulic, right is transmission.

Disconnect one of the two larger hyd lines on the top of the pump. Squirt a couple of OUNCES of oil into that elbow fitting, which will take a few minutes. Reattach the steel line but leave it one turn loose from being tight. Fire up the engine to 1/3 throttle or so and when it primes shut engine down and tighten the line. Air pressure into the LEFT hole. Are you full of hydraulic oil????? If you don't know where to add air, where have you been adding hydraulic oil???
