1206 parking brake question....

What does a guy have to do to muck up the parking brake on a 1206? He somehow managed to get the lever to lock while in reverse. After some lever wiggling & tire rocking, we got the park lock free, but it clatters yet when in gear.

You guys have any ideas?

Mike

P.S. How similar is that rear end to the one in my 806? They look about the same.

Well depends on weather ya have the over center or the new stile spring loaded like used on the 86 series . If it is Clicking then what is going on is the linkage is not pulling on the rockers lever or what every ya want to call it where it hooks to the rod the park pawl is hooked to . Ya need about 3/4 to 13/16ths lift for the pawl to clear the reverse gear , That you don't want to screw up and break a tooth off as son that is a whole lot of work to replace that gear. . Now as to will and 806 rear swap yea but i am not sure IF the innereds are the same due to the Hp increase between the two . If your shift linkage is that sloopy i do believe ya need to address that vary soon . sloopy range trans nnalert linkage is cause by people not stayen up in the main clutch , trans brake and dump valve adjustment . When they got out of wack that is when the tugging jerking and slam shifting begins and the more you tug , jerk, and slam it the worse it gets till ya end up spending green backs for something that should have never been and issue . When you have everything set correctly they will shift with two fingers .

It's still the over center, as far as I can recall. Looks to be the same as on my early 806. After looking at Messicks, the control levers & such are the same between the 8 & 1206. Going to also guess the rear end guts are also a lot heavier.

Anywho....

What should I look for externally, in terms of bent or broken? Going to guess I'm going to be pulling the TA lever & hood section behind the dash? Is there anything under the platform or behind the steering column panel?

In the meantime, I'll go dig out the manuals for the 806. I think the 1206 is covered in the rear end service book.

Under the hood behind the dash is a turnbuckle that is probably all wopped out. The bushings on the lever is probably worn out. At the very bottom of the shaft that goes from the turnbuckle there is a roll pin that’s probably shot. Need to drill that hole next size larger with new pin. Then you get to the range cover, probably needs to be pulled, and new detents rollers and spring. The cover probably needs to go to a machine shop and holes enlarged and bushings installed back to shaft size of linkages and adjust everything from there. Under no sircumstances should you be able to engage the park lock with transmission in gear. If park lock is even engaged wihile tractor is rolling to a stop you better get out check book and it ain’t cheap

Yeah, this ain't gonna be cheap. That 1206 has already been gone through. However, I can see where the new owner might have thought that stiff linkage was the reason why he couldn't get it into park. Looks like everything was made tight again & then not oiled, due to fresh paint.

I had an H that was like that. It got overhauled & used as a sprayer tractor. There were quite a few features that were "Out of Service" on that machine when I got it. And blasting media in the oil bath cup.... where there should have been oil!

Anyways....

I don't completely fault the new owner. Anything could have happened to it between the time the paint was dry until he got it. Just wonder how it could be possible.

If and OLD over center then more them likely what happened when trying to force it out of park ya stretched the short linkage and now it is not pulling the bell crank back far enough . You should be able to slide a 1/2 / 13 NUT between the top cover and under the bell crank that lifts the rod that moves the park pawl.. Almost every 06/66 that came thru my shop got the spring loaded park loc. . Back then the change over was under two hundred bucks . Over here in HILL country ya could not TRUST the over center to hold and way to many I H's took off on hills as a loaded gravity box , hay wagon, silage box took off . Now as to what to look for as far as sloopy linkage if it wiggles. wobbles , flops around fix replace rebuild . A little here a little there adds up .
