have a d17 with power steering was out in the field and heard a snap when i tried to turn at first it would turn right but not left won't trun at all with the weight on it lift it up with no weight it will turn both ways .

I bought a CIH 895 with a loader a couple of years ago. The seller said it turns ok to the left but has a problem to the right.....also said you have to be moving to get it to turn. Told the guy to remove the loader and deliver it and it's sold.
Got it home, parked it in gear and emergency brake on, got a couple of farm jacks and jacked up the front end. This steering assist system used a single hydraulic cylinder crosswise behind the front axle. With it jacked up it turned ok but the right side didn't go all the way.

The king-pin grease zirks look like they haven't seen a grease gun in decades. It took a couple of tubes of grease but I finally got grease coming out indicating the areas were well packed. I started moving the steering back and forth, would stop, add more grease and repeat the process. Didn't take 30 minutes I had perfect steering. Let the front end down and drove around awhile and no problems...steered in both directions lock to lock.........

This bought me a great tractor for a great price without a lot of time and expense in fixing and all it cost me was 30 minutes and 2 tubes of grease..........possibly your problem is similar. Good Luck.

Probably not the case but My D-17 (Series II) did that when I first bought it.
Turns out it was low in fluid.
The fluid level is supposed to be 5/8" above the top of the segment gear within the front support housing.
