Plate leaking on Massey Furguson Super 90

If it was a smaller model Massey Ferguson, I would tell you that plate is at the bottom of the clutch housing and the leak indicates that either the engine rear main seal or the transmission input shaft seal is leaking. The smaller models have a hole behind that plate that is supposed to have a loose fitting cotter pin in it to keep it from plugging up. That prevents oil from accumulating in there and getting on the clutch disc. The preceding is probably true of the Super 90 also. However, the S 90 WITHOUT Multi-Power has a conventional clutch. Those with M-P do not have a conventional clutch. That might throw another wrinkle into the situation. Does your tractor have M-P?

Is this plate right behind the interface of the back of the engine and the clutch housing? It looks like it is in the video, but I didn't find as clear a view as I would like of that relationship.

Yes, in the very first part of the video, I show where it is on the tractor. Thanks

OK so let's go with the idea that the plate may have this drainage hole and that we don't yet know how much is actually leaking.

So I'm thinking first step is to clean up the entire area, look for a weep hole, fill and check the level on the hydraulic fluid. I haven't done that yet but I think there is a dipstick. It probably will be low because we lost some removing the power steering lines when doing the head gasket job.

I drove the tractor once when I bought it. And recently looked again at the gear levers. I'll look again. I think there are 4 gears and a separate lever for low/high. I remember that when I drove it.

I will do another video of the clean plate and the gear shifts and that area.

This gives me something to start with. Thanks!

Here are some photos I took earlier and just remembered I had:

I am not familiar with the Super 90 however I believe the 8-speed transmission used a typical dry clutch. The 16 speed (multi-power) transmission used a wet clutch, which appears to be a sealed unit. The parts book shows the same plate, without a hole and jiggle pin, for both transmissions as the "cover, clutch inspection".

My thought currently is you may have a leak inside that compartment. It could be the transmission shaft, wet clutch unit, engine rear main, etc.

Which transmission does it have?

Do you have the operator's and service manuals? There should be some info in them about the clutches.

Thank you.

I don't know what transmission I have. I'm going to do a video of the tractor focusing on the shifters area to try to help identify that.

I think I bought every manual I could find and they are all in a plastic pouch over there. I'll ask Junior to look through them for that info.

Thanks!

I'm surprised you don't know which transmission it has. I guess we look at things differently. I get the manuals for equipment I acquire and read/study them to find out what I have, before I tear into things.

Without the benefit of the Super 90 manuals; I am going to say the 8-speed transmission is the High-low range transmission with the 4-speed gearbox. (2 ranges x 4 gears = 8 gear choices [reverse is not counted])

The 16-speed would be the 8-speed transmission with the addition of the 2 range Multi-power transmission. (2 x 4 x 2 = 16 gear choices).

Multi-power is controlled by a small lever mounted in the lower dash area. Does your tractor have Multi-power? if yes, it is the 16-speed, if no, it is the 8-speed.

I looked at some of your previous videos but did not see the Multi-power range selector (not saying I did not miss it). With what I saw, I would say your tractor has the 8-speed transmission.

This a picture of the dash of my MF 65 with Multi-Power. The M-P lever is at the lower right of the dash. My nephew has 3 Super 90s. He says the M-P lever is in the same location on them.

If you have the Multi_power version, the shifting mechanism in the clutch housing will rub on a hydraulic hose, causing the leak. Have seen this on 3 other 90s.
