Just got the # 9 that i bought last year going today ! The manual's picture of where the clamps go is woefully lacking.

Can anyone post a picture of where the clamps go ? Do they hold the tractor draft arms to the bars ? I just can't tell from the pictures in my manual. I do have a set of clamps that came with it, but they are homemade.......

thanks in advance,
mark

some photos would be very useful for us to help you.

What tractor are you mounting it on. There are different clamps and different locations that depend on what you are mounting it on.

Clamps were designed to clamp around each tractor draft link & mower frame to help control side to side motion of mower & draft links.

Thanks. That helps. I just can't tell from this photo.... I've read all the tractor specific descriptions in pages 35+ and did not find that it connected the mower frame to draft link.

I researched another serial range model 9 operators manual & this was the clearest photo showing clamp that I could locate. View attachment 167843
I've never been around a number 9 so I'm basically not qualified to answer, but was curious about the clamps. I see that they clamp onto the 3 point arms if I'm seeing that correctly. Thanks TX Jim, for the nice photos.

We had a few #9's over the years (still have two for clipping the pasture, plus several other makes of sickle mower). The clamps do help control side sway and (perhaps more significantly) they keep the geometry of the mower correct when you lift. With any model of sickle mower, if it's setup correctly, the bar will be level with the ground right when you drop it so the shoes are just touching the ground. When you go to raise the mower, if everything's correct the far end of the bar should lift first. With the #9's there's an oddball fluke of the geometry and linkages that make those clamps and the top link length affect if the end of the bar raises first and evenly like it should. You wouldn't think the clamps (or lack thereof) or length of the top link would make a difference on how the far versus near end of the bar lifts, but it certainly does.

We sometimes use the clamps, sometimes don't bother. One of the two #9's we still around have doesn't have them. Never caused any grief to run without them. For side motion, just tighten up your sway chains. When you don't have the clamps, it does make it so the end of the bar sometimes drags and wants to lift later than the near end (what you don't want). If using one without the clamps, you can make it lift properly (make the far end lift first/faster) by lengthening the top link. Sound odd, I know, but the geometry and linkages are such that it does. When running without the clamps, it just means you have to move the knife angle adjustment all the way forward to make sure the guards/ledgers are still level (or facing slightly down at the front - the way I prefer to run them) after you've lengthened the top link.

One problem when searching for clamps is JD model 1050 tractor isn't shown in #9 parts catalog & the yrs long gone that # 9 mowers were built. I think clamps for a model 39 could also possibly fit.

I've got a #9W, a wider version of your #9. According to my downloaded copy of the parts index, both mowers use the same frame and clamp.
The clamp part # on my mower is H10231H. The u-bolts for clamping the mower to the lift arms were missing so I had to use some extra toolbar u-bolts from a #70 Flexi planter. In the pictures below of the right side of the frame, you can see how they are used. The lift arms are connected with the pin, then the flat plates are installed against the inside of the lift arms, and tightend down. They are located about 9" forward of the end of the lift arm ball. I put a piece of rubber roofing membrane in between the clamp and lift arm to spare the paint, somewhat. I've used this mower on my old JD 1020, and also on my newer 5045 for several years with fine results. Double nuts on the clamps keep them tight when in operation. It is, after all, a pitman arm mower. I don't have a picture of the mower installed. Hope this helps.
