H rear axle bearings and shims

Assembling and shimming the outers. Going through the procedure and the housing pulls away from the case way more than I expected. Seems to need around 3/32 of shims to take up the end play. Originally had two steel shims totaling .047 but needs a least double that. I've had them completely apart, saved and marked all the pieces. The parts manual shows the spacer (item 10) inside the cone (9) but I'm wondering if it should be on the outside. Been a while since I tore it apart so not sure of my memory. Brake drum, spacer and cone on the inner end are all in place. Can anybody here who parts them out tell me if I'm right or not on the spacer.

Mike, you are correct on the location of the spacer! Your parts picture is a correct location of all your parts. Are all the spacers and retainers sliding on the axle? You must have the instructions and parts list manual, Dir. No. 248 {8-1940}? It shows how to install the axle assembly, and how to figure out the outer shim pack to get a bearing preload of .004 to .005. Something must be out of line assembling on the axle?
