29 d radiator

In the process of restoring my 29 d but the radiator thing puzzles me. online I see it holds 12 gallons or so and they talk about air pockets and such. After flushing clean water through it a few times it appears water was still inside the block because I could only get 8 gallons of antifreeze in with a couple inches left at top of radiator for expansion. It was a 50/50 premix and after asking ai why it is only good to neg. 10 degrees {after running the engine for five minutes to mix and coolng overnite} they said it would take 2.3 gallons of water to bring it up to that temp. That is still only 10.3 gallons total. Any help on this woul be appreciated.

I can’t imagine what would need to bubble it’s a pretty wide open system. Does yours have a drain port at the bottom of the head like the row crop tractors? It’s also a 29 so it could very well be smaller radiator than what came later but that pipe plug down there should be where to drain everything I’ve even tried putting a valve there. If you drained anywhere else you could have left it in the block

thanks for the reply. The drain is underneath the block and a small pipe plug below the left side spark plug also allows for venting while trying to get all the water out. Who knows

One other thing I’ve done before I forgot to mention is run it awhile in your case a couple hours probably since there’s no thermostat or water pump it will take awhile hopefully you have a task for it.

drain it into a clean tub and then test it’s freeze point (I use a refractometer but there are cheaper ways)

If it doesn’t I add a jug of straight and stir it with the stick then check it again and put it back

Just got a tractor back from Oklahoma where I had to do this it was only mixed to —15 and even though I had just put new coolant in while I added the block heater it tested -25 when I was done so then it got another shot

But that had a cab with heater lines water pump and a thermostat goofy surge tank I wasn’t confident I was getting a reading of the actual sample in the block (but should have been a lower freeze point and still was too high) and way more places for coolant to hide

The plug on the left side of the block is not for a vent when filling the radiator. The small pipe plug on the left side of the block is for a elbow that the water injector tube and valve fastens to. Evidently you don't have the water valve.

that makes sense because there is a plug on the left side of the carb that seems to serve no purpose. I got this tractor end of May and have learned a lot in the last five months and spent a lot of hours cleaning it up, it was a mess. It litterally sat on the ground, bees nests in the radiator, debris and skeletons in the combustioin chamber from open exhaust. When I took the head off the intakes looked like they had been freshly ground. Exhaust pitted and rusted from water that got in. pulled a piston no carbon or junk in the grooves and the sleeves looked like hone marks. This is my first endevor on anything like this. I really think it may have been rebuilt and never even started. The carb was very clean so someone had done some work. Reground the exhaust myself and put it back together. there was probably 10 gallons of water in the gear case as well as a lot of water in the crankcase but no rust.

Got it to run now but trying to get the governor and throttle balance thing ironed out. Thanks
