    With the engine running, the voltage from the resistor bounces around all over the place with every cylinder firing. What you read in that case will depend greatly on the particular meter you use.

    The resistor only reduces voltage when there is a load on it. If you check it with the coil connected and the points closed, you should find somewhere around 6-8 volts.

    resister used in wiring alternator

    AFAIK, GM always used a resistor. No doubt the location varied by application, my 80 Chevy had it on the back of the PC board that held the instruments. Resistor was in parallel with the warning lamp, so the alternator would still charge if the lamp burned out.

    FWIW, I wouldn't assume the new regulator is correctly set either. I made that mistake with a regulator sourced from this site (for a non-green tractor) and it cost me a battery to learn my mistake. "Trust but verify"
