    JD M horn button?

    Model L Herc/Mag question

I had a '41 LA, and from memory, it was an 16-pitch. Try finger-starting a 3/8-16 (course) to verify.

Juice ran out of my 18v Li DeWalt battery

Bag it. Lithium can be poisonous, which is something the Tesla people don't want you to think about.

    Domestic water pump volume control

It's more than possible that there is a foot valve on the pump, so blowing through it backward may not do anything unless that valve has failed.

    JD M stalls

Well, that was either a Freudian slip or a very apt description of the function of the glass separator. I think I'm going to start using that term since I've seen a lot of crap in those "bowels" in the past. If grit, sludge, sediment, or water got through there and into the carb bowl, pulling...

Old gas tank with varnish and fuel and E-85

I've had pretty good success using methanol instead of ethanol. One potential risk is that if you system has any lead soldered seams, the methyl alcohol does have an affinity for lead. In the short term (for flushing) you might get away with it. I had a really nasty Case RC tank that...

Brown and Sharpe Automatic Screw Machines

Did you have the "lovely" electric feed clutches on the Acmes? They couldn't have buried them any deeper unless they designed the machine with the clutch as the initial component, and everything else as an afterthought.

Have you ever ran a Shaper?

I was fairly impressed by the Lenz-Liebherr and Fellows hydrostrokes. I did rebuild and recontrol on a few of those, and it was educational to watch someone who knew what they were doing to set up and run those.

Brown and Sharpe Automatic Screw Machines

I worked with Acme Gridley (later National Acme) instead. They were just a bit more versatile, especially the chuckers. They could be set up to feed bar stock or blanks, sacrificing only one of the six stations for feeding that way. Either way, they were just as hot, oily, and "fun" to work on.

That's a nifty brake. Is it just the single shoe, or does it have fingers? It looks like it could do 10 ga. all day long.

    Coating a lawnmower deck

Does anyone but me use Tnemec 141 Epoxoline for this kind of stuff? It's a lot more resilient than POR, self-etching, and can be recoated. And that's the key. If you want a "one-and-done" coating, there probably isn't one. If you practice routine maintenance and touch up the deck once a...

    Ductless Mini Split systems

This was installed in the workshop in 2004. In 2022, I had to add about 8 ounces of R-22 to get it back to ideal superheat and efficiency. Fortunately, I maintain my universal certification, and can still buy 55G drums of R-11 if so inclined, among anything else still commercially available...

    M fluids

^^ Very similar to synthetic in that regard, and it can happen with even infantile (less than 30 years old) seals also. The oil will start cleaning out the old Pennzoil sludge and if the seals are hard as carbon, leakage starts to appear. If that happens, there are some seal conditioners which...

    Cement anchor bolts question

I've had to design bases for material handling robots, like larger FANUC and Yaskawa units. Some of those will do 400"/min with a load on the arm. The moment load of those on accel/decel can get pretty extreme. Hauling a 90 lb chunk of casting from the vertical mill to the turning center in a...
