SUCCESS! Turns out points are rascals that are prone to moving after you've set them, and if they're close, but not on, the engine misfires. Who knew. Does anyone know what the actual tolerance on the point gap is? Because it feels like ±.001". Ran the tractor for ~30 minutes, no issues...

Yes. I replaced the carb in the spring and it ran fine until this problem started popping up

They're the autolite 405, From what I was reading, these ones have better performance with modern fuels.

Was an intuition, then I retorqued the plugs and tried again and all the cylinders were like rice crispies. I know hotter/cooler spark can cause its own set of problems, I just don't remember what those problems are. I'm just not sure where to start on misfires because this is the first time...

progress! Replaced the resistor, tractor started briefly, had some misfires, loud pops, I think one cylinder, probably towards the back of the engine (Cyl 3 or 4?), it was already giving up when I hit the kill switch. plugs are torqued and gapped to .025", is the spark too aggressive, or is it...

Short answer on understanding is...Kinda? From what I understand, starting at the battery, positive grounds on the frame of the tractor, negative goes out, through the starter switch, into the resistor, then on to the coil (Among other places). In the coil assembly, some kind of techno...

Pulled the plugs, back to no spark, and extreme bewilderment.

Plugs are new. Engine hasn't started with them in yet. I've replaced all the electrical components going to the plugs except the wiring harness, and resistor.

Once again at a complete loss. I've got spark. I've got fuel flow, confirmed through the bottom screw on the carb, nice steady flow, went for 30 seconds before I plugged the hole again with no sign of slowing. Confirmed the firing order with the service manual (1243). I don't think the timing...

Technically, the bowl is a filter of sorts for sediment, but that's semantics at this point. I'll double check that all the valves move freely on the carb in the morning, then check the line attached to the bowl.

    At my wits 2Nd

So we've now moved on to a vague fuel problem, I wasn't getting any fuel from the tank into the bowl with or without the fuel cap on, so I pulled the fuel line off, with the line off fuel will flow to the bowl, checked the line for blockages, liquid has no problem going through it. I've taken...

Yep. Turns out I'm an idiot. Adjusted the points and got immediate spark. I'll put the tractor back together and fire it up tomorrow.

So turns out the volt meter thing was user error, I don't wanna talk about it, but the battery is sitting around 6.20V, so plenty of juice. I've replaced too many parts at this point for it to not be user error, so just to idiot check, when I gapped the points, the tutorial I followed looked...

Unfortunately I don't have a tester light, or a volunteer to push the starter while I hold the voltmeter on it, but bypassing the resistor directly into the coil also produces no spark.

    At my wits 2Nd

So let's make sure I understand this correctly, I hook the battery up to the tractor, strip the ends of a piece of extension cord I had lying around, put one end on the negative, the other end on the post of the coil assembly, touch the coil to a piece of metal like the frame of the tractor, if...

Volt meter can't get a good read right now, I'll probably take some time to clean the contacts with some scotchbrite later, battery charger I hooked it up to is saying 6.3-6.4, but it's a Canadian Tire charger so I'm not super confident in those numbers.

I double check pretty much every time I go back to the battery. 6v at the battery.

    At my wits 2Nd

coil does not spark when hooked directly to the battery. and touching the frame of the tractor.

    At my wits 2Nd

I need to be careful here because it's positive ground so everything is weird, do I connect it to the positive, or negative on the battery? Also, do I need a specific gauge of wire, or will a piece of 120v extension cord do it?

Did some continuity checks. Top thread of the coil assembly has continuity to the points, but not to the contact point on the cap. Cap looks clean because it's new, still shocked I found a OEM part for an 80 year old tractor.
