    The ends of that front plate extend out on either end from the metal behind it. You might consider fabricating a bracket that slides down over the exposed ends for whatever blade you find. Maybe add threaded holes on the back for bolts to act as set screws to hold it in place.

    They tend to stop in the same position when you shut the key off. That eventually wears the ring gear teeth in that one position. At that point, the "perfect spot" is actually anywhere except where it normally stops. If it has the same symptoms after shutting it off multiple times in the future...

    On tubed tires, air can move in and out of the tire without moving in and out of the tube just from flex. The beads on tubed tires do not make a perfect seal with the bead on the rim. That's why they need tubes.

    Make sure that the transmission is in neutral before attempting to apply power to the starter, but yes you can use a jumper cable or something similar to provide the power directly to the starter, so you can disconnect it quickly and easily.

    Also, the seals between the trans and rear axle housing are known to leak some on those old tractors, so most folks use the UTF in both to avoid cross contamination.

    Gas dripping after cranking with no start is pretty normal on those updraft carb systems. When the engine turns it sucks gas up into the intake but if it doesn't start and you stop cranking the starter the gas in the intake has to go somewhere.
