1755 cyc location

Number 1 cylinder on any in line engine is aways at the front.
This can be a case of semantics.

The # 1 cylinder is generally but not always at the front of a vehicle. It is on the 1755.

I would say look for the water pump or water outlet and #1 should be that end, away from the drive end. Many forklifts have the engine mounted with #1 to the rear of the lift as the radiator is at the rear. Allis Chalmers Gs have #1 at the rear of the tractor. That is not to say there may not be a few odd balls numbered the other way.

What if it is J.I. Case cross-motor tractor…….?
Here’s a 2003 YT thread with an interesting tale about the discovery of a Case cross-motor tractor for all you guys that like those who pen a thread in the tractor vet style. However, this story contains zero self imposed back patting. Someone else is going to have to answer if it is right or left. Case cross-motor thread

I meant front of the engine I didn’t say front of the vehicle. By common conjecture the water pump end of the block is always the front no matter which way the engine sits in the vehicle.
