2240 John deere

When taking the radiator top off of my 2240 John Deere I noticed oil in the radiator.Any ideas where it could be coming from? Engine oil and hydraulic oil lowers very little between oil changes.

I would venture to say cracked head/block, possibly sleeve...just a wild guess though

Can you tell if the oil is blackened? If so, I'd think that it would be engine oil. Is there any coolant in the engine or hydraulic oil? Although it does need to be fixed, in the short term, a bit of oil in the coolant is not nearly as bad a coolant in the oil... Keep us posted

My first guesses would be a head gasket or a warped head. Water in the oil I'd guess a crack in the block.

There's a LOT of possibilites as to what you are seeing.

One thing to remember, a little oily slime in the radiator is a LOT less deady to the engine than finding condensed coolant in the form of foamy slime on the oil fill cap, or a shot of coolant when the drain plug is loosened!

The oil in the radiator is creamy looking on the cap and around the radiator neck.

Use a coolant test. Is the corrosion inhibiter depleted?
Any bubbles in the coolant with the engine running?
Any water in the crankcase?
As previously stated. If it's just a very thin sheen oil on top of the coolant, don't worry.

Does the 2240 have a oil cooler on it? If so that would be the first place I would look.

Is there a test that can be done to determine where the problem is or does the head have to come off?

The oil in the radiator is black at times and I do add some coolant once in a while.How can I detremine if the head gasket or the head is defective.No foreign fluids in transmission or engine oil.
