2N Governor

Cutting alfalfa yesterday and out of the blue it just died. It was making a weird rattling noise from around the governor area just before it died. I have another running 2N so I removed the distributor and coil and put it on and no go. It is getting spark so I swapped carbs and still nothing. It is getting good fuel flow. I now suspect the governor. Would a bad governor keep the tractor from starting? Thanks

A bad governor shouldn't keep it from starting. You say you are getting spark, but because you heard that rattling noise, I wonder if you are getting spark at the right time. Turn the engine to where number one cylinder is on the compression stroke and at TDC. or close, then remove the distributor cap and see if the rotor is pointing where the number one plug wire would be on the cap.

I checked the number one cylinder and it lines up with number one plug wire. What are the symptoms if the inline resister is bad. How would I check that?
