I never heard of it but local dealer has one in his lot. I've heard of 504.

Neighbor had a 404 near hear with a Freeman loader on it.

Probably just a lesser known utility model especially in areas that row crop tractors are more prevalent. There was 8,256 of them built between 1961-68. Link to IH 404 utility on Tractordata

The Farmall 404 was basically the 4 speed rear end from a Farmall 240 mated to the front end of a Farmall 340 with the C-135 engine. There also was an 8 speed version but I don't remember the details. Wayne Kittleson, a Wisconsin man is the guru on them.

Pretty much the last stage of development of the original Farmall C. C> Super C > 200 > 230 > 240 > 404.

I have an IH 404, the utility model, withe 8 speed option, no three point, and manual steering. Looks like the Farmall on smaller tires, with a swept back WFE.

Very little difference in the "core" between the two tractors. Mostly badging, and the location of the headlights. Swap the rear axles, front bolster, wheels and tires with ones from a Super C, for example, and you have an "almost Farmall." Gearing is even the same.
