420w final drive question

My 1958 420 W is leaking on the left side rear axle. I’m assuming the seal in the final drive is compromised. I will eventually be fixing the seal, but in the meantime, I’m worried about damaging the gears internally. I really can’t find where the ad plug is to add the gear oil? Can somebody give me a diagram on the 420 W where I add gear oil to the final drive on the left-hand side?… I’m assuming each side has a separate plug? Or is there just one plug for the entire rear axle? I have spent significant time in my manual and online, trying to identify the proper plug to add the gear oil, but not getting a clear answer. Any photos or diagrams would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for anyone’s help in advance.

Welcome to the forums.

Your 420W doesn't have a final drive like a crawler. The transmission and differential are one compartment, and the axles (straight out from the differential housing to the wheels) get lubed from the transmission. Check the transmission level as shown in your Operator's Manual.

The John Deere 420W two row utility tractor does have left and right final-drive housing. Each housing has two 1/2 inch check plugs at back of tractor above the drawbar, left and right. One a fill plug, one a drain plug. Each housing holds 3-1/2 quarts SAE 90 oil. From operators manual om-t19-1155 John Deere Tractor Model 420 two row utility. Page 43..
