44 A pto oil seal

I have a 44 A currently replacing the pto oil seal. Took the old one out and with it came a felt washer. The original seal is quite a bit thicker than the new one . I have heard of people using two new seals to replace the older thicker ones. My question is, is that necessary? Also my parts manual shows nothing about a felt washer behind the oil seal. Anyone know anything about there being a felt washer there ?

I too have a 44 A, I replaced the pto seal & it too had a felt washer/spacer. I replaced the seal with
2 seals & still had room for the orginal felt, I felt it worked as a slinger. The Seals I used weren't
From Deere , but I can tell you It doesn't leak.

The original 1/2'' wide seal had 2 sealing
lips. One to keep oil in, the other to keep
air out.
You need to install two single lip seals.
Install them so the garter springs face
away from each.
