641 PTO kicks out

Hello all, What causes the PTO to intermittently kick out?? The load isn't necessarily changing and there doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason for when it kicks out. Any ideas on what needs to be addressed to solve this issue?

Possibly damaged splines on the coupler and/or the shaft which is not allowing it to engage fully in the first place.

From your description, provided the shifter seems to move its full range, it sounds like your shifter detent spring is broken or weak or the ball is worn. Your start to trouble shooting this is to remove the round cover on the left side of the center housing where the PTO shifter is located, and watch what happens as you move the arm that the handle would engage.

Thanks for the feedback. When I remove the cover, I assume all the fluid will drain out?

I don't recall off hand. Full level for that chamber is around three inches. Just check your dipstick to see how high it is relative to the plate opening.

With tractor off grab the pto shaft at rear of tractor and see if it slides in and out. If it does the shafts bearing snap ring and or groove it sits is most likely damaged. As the shaft slides back and forth it walks itself disconnected.

In my experience.... ITs...............Usually a damage pto rear bearing housing where the c-clip has popped out and laying down in the fluid... that lets the tractor pto shaft move forwards and backwards a bit, so that the shaft can now slowly walk the pto coupling into the off position. This happens as the shaft gets pulled and pushed as you make turns, and you lift and lower the 3pt as you go over bumps and hills. Removing the shaft and inspecting the rear housing shows the missing c-clip and in lots of cases the groove for the c-clip is damaged so that simply fishing the clip out and replacing it, will not last very long.. This can happen when a pto shaft is twisted and no longer slides in and out, or the shaft is rusted, not allowing it to extend and retract. I have probably replace 4 or5 rear pto bearing housing on the 600/800, 2000/3000 series now. The implement pto shaft gets twisted if you hit a lot of rocks, stumps, dirt pile, and other obstacles. And the shear pin or clutch does not give fast enough, or the shaft is over stressed to many times. And over hardend shear pin bolts dont help as well. If you grab the tractor pto shaft and try to push in and out, it should have very very little forwards and backwards movement. With the tractor NOT running and the pto shaft engaged, you can push the pto shaft back and forth and slowly see it turn off the pto lever if you wiggle it long enough. Bigger size shredders. balers or implements tend to work the smaller tractor pto's harder,,, as contrair, bigger tractors tend to twist the pto shafts and work the smaller implements harder. I have also seen broken tractor pto shafts, and twisted tractor pto shafts several times. Twisted shafts are very hard if not impossible to turn off and on as they are twisted in the internal off/on slliding coupler.
