70 Diesel Issues

Need some guidance here

I have a 1955 70diesel. When I got it, the pony hadn’t run for at least 30 years and the main engine hadn’t run for 2 years (it was pull started).

The muffler had a crack and the crankcase had some water in it, with the diesel oil floating on top of it. I drained it all out and refilled with fresh oil. I redid the points and coils on the pony and with a little seafoam in the tank, it runs good.

The problem is I cannot get the main engine to go into compression.

With the starting lever back, the main engine spins decompressed and after a couple seconds has good oil pressure. When I go forward on the lever to go into compression mode, the Bendix just pulls the pony motor back and the engine stops spinning.

Any ideas how to get it adjusted to go into compression with the pony motor driving it?

My 730 diesel is electric start but doesn’t the pony start tractors have 2 levers, one to engage the pony and another one for compression release? Sounds like maybe you are moving the wrong lever.

Can you pull start the diesel engine?

The 70 diesel only has 1 lever. To engage big engine on de compression you pull the lever all the way back. Once you have oil pressure you slowly move the lever forward until the swivel just touches the linkage coupling nut. At this position clutch to big engine should still be engaged and you have full compression. When I start my 70 diesel I normally run it thru full compression a couple revolutions and then I advance the fuel throttle lever. Once the engine fires push the clutch engagement lever full forward. Included are pictures of the manual on how to adjust the linkage and operation. Hope this helps

Thanks that's helpful. It disengages with a snap just about the neutral position (going forward). I'm going to check and ensure the decompression fingers are releasing from the valve springs.

I can't pull start it yet as I'm a one man operation.
