706 Farmall

I am looking for clarification on a Post that the Tractor Vet posted December 2 2012? I am working on a 706 Farmall 1964 with a TA. The question in Reference to Adjusting Clutch and Dump Valve adjustment? The Tractor Vet states to Hold the transmission Brake lever back against the gear and adjust cleves so that the pin will slide into the hole? What is he meaning when he says hold the transmission brake lever back against the gear? Is the Brake Handle up or down all the way? He also states to adjust the dump valve by turning in the adjusting bolt until the light comes on? Is the tractor needing to run at a certian RPM? My light is on at low RPM? And when the helper is holding down the clutch, I have no pressure at the MCV.? I get about 20 PSI when the clutch is released at the MCV. I mounted a pressure gage on the side so I could monitor pressure? Any Help or Clarification would be Greatly Appreciated. Thanks

First off, to adjust the clutch, free play should be about one inch. Only resistance on the pedal should be the return spring. The dump valve is operated by the clutch link. There will be a long 1/4 bolt with a turnbuckle hooked to the dump valve. I like to adjust them so with the clutch pedal all the way down adjust the 1/4 inch bolt so the transmission light comes on and as you release the clutch pedal in high first gear the light will go out before the tractor begins moving. This is critical that the light goes out before the tractor begins moving. Now the transmission brake, NOT the park brake, on the opposite side of the transmission where the clutch shaft comes thru the housing there is a rod that goes to the lower part of the transmission, on an angle. Has a turnbuckle on the end and pin. Remove the pin, have a helper hold the clutch pedal all the way down, now hole the arm that goes into the lower transmission cover counter clockwise, down and adjust the turnbuckle so the pin will just go into the turnbuckle. Release the clutch pedal now lengthen the turnbuckle one full turn and insert the pin. Easy😀….

By some stroke of IH genius in the original configuration the tell-tale light also is connected to the engine oil pressure sender. So find that on the engine and unplug it to see if it is the MCV pressure is actually turning on the light or if it is low engine oil pressure. If there has been an oil pressure gauge added to the engine that confirms good oil pressure then this info has no impact on your scenario. A worn out MCV pump would also cause the TA circuit to have low pressure, sluggish power steering would confirm a worn pump.

When adjusting the dump valve when the tel tale light goes out let the clutch up and ADD one more full turn then lock it down . On the trans brake most times due to extensive FIELD TESTING i have found that here again one is NOT enough to get the trans bake to do it's job and have at times gone two turns . while i was doing the buy sell thing and scarfing up every 706 that i found dead or alive ya got 1 in 5 that did not need a clutch , T/A and a charging system rebuild . I was doing my best to buy everyone in In and Ill. And they just kept on coming . My UPS driver hated me with all the T/A's he delivered to the house since the shop had no address three to four T/A's a week plus clutches . Then i had some Belltec rock augers come in and that one 4 inch weighed 149 pounds he was lucky i was home to help him .

Your talking the park loc and like Fred said the TRANS brake is on the right side fo the tractor with a rod from the clutch release shaftdown to a arm/ Lever hooked to a shaft that goes into the speed transmission cover that has a sorta hooked arm up inside with a small brake pad that rides against the gear inside , This is to SLOW the transmission gears for less gear clash during gear change . The pin has a hair pin holding the pin in question into the clevis . When you push the clutch pedal down the bell crank on the clutch shaft pulls on the trans brake lever pulling the small pad against the gear inside . NOW depending on how loose that bell crank is on the shaft some times one turn past where the pin will slide in will not be enough and ya may have to add a half to full turn more . This is a FEEL and experience thing . So since you have removed the M C V sending unit and put a gauge in with the clutch down to the stop lag on the clutch pedal touching the floor plateback off that LONG 1/4 inch bolt about seven turns then start turning it in watching the gauge as you should have your 20 TILL the dump valve opens and when the pressure drops STOP , le the clutch pedal up then ADD ONE MORE FULL TURN and loc in place with the jam nut main clutch free travel is between 1- 1 1/8th. The tel tail sender for the M C V and engine oil pressure are all on the one circuit . The big question is what is the lock up pressure and the lube circuit will not tell ya that ya get that off the bottom plug on the M C V and for a 706 i set them by the pressure reg . spring ya want 240-250 P S I .
