New points
Coil tests good
Carb cleaned and mostly rebuilt
Fresh fuel
Good fuel flow
Wico distributor

Ran when parked situation. I’m not sure when it was used last. More than 6 years. It was parked in the barn at some
Point by my dad. He died 2020. When you try to start it it almost starts while cranking the starter but it never picks up. Same exact thing happens if you give it a heaping dose of starting fluid. It literally acts like a cold diesel with no glow plugs, firing enough to kinda run with the help of the starter. It did start once after doing the points and sounded good for maybe 20 seconds. Which led me to figure it was the carb. Did the carb, no change.

Waiting on new compression tester to come in the mail, but that doesn’t seem like it would be the issued since it only has 800 or so hours on it. They only used it to hay about 10 acres for most of the last 40 years. But maybe a stuck valve from sitting.

When cranking timing light has it perfect on DC. Firing order is correct order. I did wonder if I was 180 off and swapped but doing so resulted in backfires through the carb. However, when set that way the wires are in the same orientation as manual shows with #1 being on the left closest to you, and the label on the distributor is facing out. That leads me to believe that the distributor hasn’t been spun. But I spun the engine and felt for compression stoke and it tells me #1 is back right on the distributor.

Chasing my tail at this point. My old compression tester won’t seal so I
Ordered a new one.

Any idea?

For a quick test. Pull the #1 plug out and with the plug wire hooked to it and the plug grounded on the block/head see if you see a spark at the same time, it pushes compression out the plug hole when you crank the engine.

Has good spark at all 4 plugs. Could be better but plenty good to run.
But if the spark is not at the correct time, it will not run. It may be right; I offered a no cost way to check that the timing was close to correct. When cranking and using a timing light it is possible to have the light show the timing marks correctly, even when timing is wrong. The marks are lined up every rotation but firing is only correct every other rotation.

What is the voltage in to the coil while cranking? What gap are the points set at? Do you get an even cranking sound like all cylinders have equal compression? I'm betting on a stuck valves.

That’s what I’m thinking other than the fact that it ran that one time for 20 seconds and sounded great. And it has a nice even cranking cranking.

Should have new compression tester in the mail tomorrow.

Pretty sure I checked coil while cranking during my original diagnosis. I did run a jumper to the coil anyway to eliminate that as an issue. But you know. Maybe my starter is sucking to much juice.. I’ll check that again tonight!!!

One thing you can try is power the coil with different battery. Even using jumper cables from another vehicle. As long as you disconnect the. tractor’s power wire to the coil there will be no issue doing this.
