another regulator/polarizing question

When you polarize a regulator, does it tell the charging system whether you have a negative or positive ground?

I have a new regulator that has a P/N on the bottom. With my limited experience I can only recall seeing a regulator labeled either positive or negative ground. This is a new regulator.

Congratulations, You pretty well have it correct. When you polarize you impart a certain correct North/South residual Magnetic Polarity in the iron field poles so when the armature rotates inside it the correct corresponding Electrical +/-polarity is present to match your battery i.e. if the system is Pos or Neg ground........ Some VR's are bi polar and work at either polarity while others may not.
