Baler emergency

Gehl 1870 Round Baler. (I tried to post earlier but am new at this and don't think it worked)

Was baling fine but then the belts quit turning when the gate was shut. Tried adjusting tension on the chain that controls the rollers, checked psi and that was right at 140, checked oil. Can't find any information on the net and am stumped. Trying to finish baling before more rain so some guidance on this would sure help!

Drive mechanisms need to be assessed. Using a bar or pin, (tractor off and PTO out of gear but not locked ) turn tje PTO and watch the components. It could be as simple as a shear pin, or broken drive shaft/gear box. Jim

Just to be clear, the belts run when the gate is open, then slow down and stop when the gate is closed.

Something has most likely sheared. I THINK the drive sprocket is bolted with two or three small bolts that can shear occasionally. It's been a while since I've looked at one, I'm going by memory and it's been known to fail me. Check all of the sprockets, I bet one of them is spinning when under load, but tight enough to turn the belts when there's no load.

Well, it looks like the problem with the Gehl 1870 is resolved (yet to be tested, but its looking good.) We think it was an air lock. He drained the air and let it sit for a couple days, then he put air back in but over the 140 psi, then slowly let out the air until he got down to 140 psi, and now it looks like the belts are turning with the gate closed. We'll have to wait and see what happens when the weather dries up and we can cut the rest of the fields.

I think i got rid of my Gehl baler manual. if i didn't i'm not sure where i would have put it. If i remember I'll try to take a look.
