Battery question

Well I went to start my sons 1951 Chev and found the battery dead as a door nail. I hooked it up to a charger and figured I better check the water. Well its froze. So its there any hope that after it charges that it will be a good battery again or is it just a core now. I have never had a good battery freeze but know it can if the get drained like this one. So is there any hope??

Oh by the way I did drive his truck around a little and parked it where he will see it every day so maybe he will get it in gear and start working on it. LOL

if its cold enough to freeze the battery then I sure wouldn't expect that kid to be out working on the truck.

If its completely discharged then the water is just that water and would freeze I would try to warm it and then charge it but I don't expect it will ever work again.

Freezing can ruin the grids that support the lead. If broken, it may be toast. Thaw it and charge it. 50 50 chance. JimN

I would expect him to work on it either unless he fried up the wood stove which he can do any time he wants to. Its been in the shop now for a month so I had to drive it out so I can work on a couple tractors I have. Sure wish I had built the shop bigger so I had room for more then one project at a time. Either that or had some place to the tools that take up about 50% of the shop

Put it on a slow charge for at least 2 hours and see how it acts after it comes up.

Might be plumb okay....might be junk.

Put a slow (2 amp) charge on the battery for 24 hours. After removing the charger let the battery sit for about an hour then make sure all the cells have adequate water. If they need water add distilled. Your battery will now be charged. The question however is will it HOLD the charge. To find that out go to your local Wal Mart and spend 99 cents on a hydrometer. They are back in the battery section. Now test every cell with the hydrometer. If any of the cells are "dead" your battery is pretty well shot - dump it and get a new one. If at least 3 balls are suspended in the hydrometer for each cell then your battery will probably be alright.

lol Hay going to look at a 3 axle trailer tomorrow morning. He is interested in my John Deere A , tractor. Might do a bit of bartering.

Well itis morning here and 7:16 am Wednesday. Here in mid Missouri. Bit cool outside and coffee is making. Have a dang headache again this morning. Had it yesterday to for sometime. ... Oh well got that appointment so I will head out for it in hour or so.
Thanks for the call last night. With the sickness I did not think of checking for two axles having brakes and not one on trailer like that.

Be careful where you place it to thaw. The case may be cracked and although the electrolyte may freeze it’s still acid. It can make a real mess if it gets on any metal.

I agree with the other post slow charge first 12/24 HRS. 2 amps.Then normal charge if shows any sign of life. I think it is probably junk, Checking state of charge/capacity reguires load testing a fully charged battery at 1/2 the rated amps. for 15 seconds and it has to hold a minimum voltage of 9.6V at 80 degrees F. at the end of test. Then you 'll know for sure the battery is serviceable.
