when I had cows fence was on side blasted bull i had had would lean until he popped staples out then he would go were-ever he wanted.
he would get the cows bred even thou they didn't think cows needed to be bred 9 months later out out came a calf.

I think that may be the reason my Barb wire is on the ground. Neighbor thinks Deer may get hurt on it?? I never seen a fence yet that the deer couldn't jump over with no problem. I am not crazy about Barb wire and we don't have cattle but from the old days it was everywhere. When and if I build a new fence I think high Tensile wire would be a good choice.

I have lots of 5 wire cattle fencing, boundary and otherwise. Barbwire on your side against the flats as others have said. smaller deer do crawl thru it and will cause 2 strands to twist together. Kind of a pain.

Around here it always seemed that you and your neighbor stood face to face and declared everything on your right side was your fence and everything on his side was his. Your side was stapled on your side and his on his. That always seemed equitable to me. I was always lucky to have good neighbors.

I really like high tensile. I enclosed four acres 35 years ago and it was great how trouble free it was. That wire was galvanized steel. Now I think that they use aluminum, at least I helped install some later on. You have to be careful to not kink it because it is weak in that spot.

Barb wire your side . Get it surveyed and corners marked . Send neighbor a copy . Get surverier to put markers on line so you can make a straight line when running fence . Might want to see if you have "The purple law " in your state . It allows you to mark your boundary with two lines of paint on trees , post etc . instead of no tresspasting / no hunting signs . Works like a sign in the eyes of the law .

A neighbor I had in Colorado Wanted to add to his house on the side facing a state forest. To obtain a permit he was required to have a certified survey done. 6 feet of his entire home was already on the park land. He had to find a park tangent land owner willing to sell 1/2 acre to the park with money derived from the neighbor seeking the permit. there is now a jog in the park boundary around his extended house.

Wire on cattle side. I prefer barb wire for cattle. Smooth wire is worthless unless electrified for cattle. There was high tensile wire in a farm when I bought 30 years ago. Finally got ride of that awful stuff.
When I built a new fence on our property line, I called the neighbor and said we could either spend money on a surveyor or we can both agree on the property line. We both agreed to the property line and we saved the surveyor costs. That was nearly 20 years ago. We are both still happy with the new fence and where it is located. But you have to have a good neighbor to do that. BTW we are 4th generation neighbors. So that helps too.

Six strands of good barb wire are pretty difficult to crawl thru. Five good ones are even a good deterrent. My opinion is that I HATE high tensile barb wire. It is NASTY stuff to work with and when it breaks it could decapitate a person. Robert Frost said good fences make good neighbors but they both hafta be basically good human beings in the first place. Good luck. kelly

I agree with you on 15 1/2 gauge Gaucho wire (made in Arkansas) is nasty.......that's the bad side when installing. The good side is that the galvanized coating lasts for decades, doesn't stretch so it stays tight like you installed it, and the barbs are extremely sharp (stay galvanized too) and are close together.......just ask my cows. All my exterior fencing is Gaucho except for where I have field fencing adjacent to the road where I don't want any cases of calves getting out and into the road, but there are 2 strands above the field fencing.

My Gaucho is steel and hard to kink.
