Case 311 generator

I know I have a problem with my 311 keeping the battery charged. I have a multimeter but not a pro at using it. To test the generator do I just test across the 2 terminals, or a terminal and a ground. Pretty tight working around all that sheet metal. I can't really see which terminal is which on the generator. Voltage regulator is a major headache just getting to it. Thanks all. Also if it is the generator, do I have to take it out of the tractor to replace brushes, or will those long screws holding the back clear manifold/carb etc.

On this site in the archives John T, retired Electrical Eng. had a step by step trouble shooting procedure for generator systems with voltage regulators. Maybe it is still looming in the cloud or never never land I do not know, but in the past I used it, it was very helpful for a guy that does not understand the magic in our tractors elctrical systems. Good hunting gobble

Here is a link to a thread that contains it. John T A circuit gen. troubleshooting
Even though he doesn’t mention it Delco systems are A circuit.

Used Red MN, my electrical skills are sketchy and so are my computer skills. So thank you for bringing that forward.Seems TO ME!! that finding old information is tougher for me. Don't know why, maybe my onboard computer is slowing down. lol gobble

Put the meter leads on the battery, plus to plus, negative to negative with the engine running about half speed. Reading should be about 14.2 volts.
Generator will have to come out to check brushes. I have repaced a number of Genny's with a Delco alternator.

When the tractor is running, you should get about 14 volts across the terminals of a 12 volt battery. The Multimeter will have voltage settings for AC and DC, make sure you use the DC setting. Is it a generator or an alternator? If it is the generator, it may be charging just fine, and discharging through the voltage regulator. Disconnect a battery cable next time you park the tractor. One other thing to check is tension on the fan belt.
