Cub pistons choices

I had a Cub engine rebuilt last year and the engine kit came with Fire Crater type Al pistons. I was a little surprised at that.

Good grief that was Way back way tomany years ago to remember kit part numbers . the kits were for a 185 head , carb timing changes to the dist. that today who are you going to find that can recurve a dist . Around here i know of no one as i am the last man standing who knows how and still has a dist .strobe machine . Back in my day every dealership had one and one OLD GOAT knew how and few young guys ever bothered to learn the art. I was doing this way back in 1964 when i bought a NEW 1020 Sun Scope and a 505 Sun dist. strobe and went to the classes to learn how to use them . Back then i was striving to build a wild vary fast F E block Ford and go where no one has gone before . I lived ate and drank Drag racing and to build a FORD to RUN and do it all on my own . The only thing i did not do was the balancing as i did not have the means . I did the machine work myself , the Cam came from Cal. special built a one of a kind . When done then came the engine timing and many hours of doing and testing . The testing i had a leg up as my one cousin and a family friend had interest and owned a local drag strip where i could run under the CLOCK during the week . This is where i really learned what a degree here five there could do . Then came tractors and WHOA this does NOT work on tractors so a new learning curve came about to squeak out a couple more horses as now your not talking gaining MORE RPM at higher RPM on a tractor everything works in reverse as load increases increased timing start to KILL ya and now ya need a timing curve to start backing up FAST . to hang out and get down and dirty .

YT offers “pop-up” pistons in both the .020” & .030” overbore size. The OP wanted STD bore pistons which YT only offers in a flat top.

I used YT flat tops. It runs great, but the engine is a little noiser. The wrist pins were loose, so new pistons were an easy fix.
