Devasting fire

In our area [Eastern Iowa] there are food pantries in two
local towns. Are there no local pantries in that area?

There are pantries in the area and that will help those in immediate need such as the apartment tenants. Long term the grocery store serviced a population of 3,000 people counting those a few miles outside of the village. No other business can readily offer products like a grocery store. Your average gas station/ convenience store might stock a dozen cans total of soup while even a small grocery would have 100 cans or more total of tomato, chicken noodle, vegetable, and other soups. They nor Dollar General will keep up with that and the likely short term demand does not justify expanding to do so.

Tom: As usual, somebody has to poke Californians in a negative way unfortunately. I fail to get it to be honest and it happens here at YT far too often in my opinion. I feel sympathy and sadness for folks living in all places that suffer these catastrophes.

I just indicated that they probably may not get the press coverage that the west coast received. If that is poking at something as you say, you must really be looking for something negative. Please reread my post you are incorrect . And by the way I never saw anything ABOUT A FIRE IN OVID, ny on the national news, perhaps you did. gobble

60 people out of work in an area that does not have lots of jobs. Very scenic area but getting work is tough.

Well Tom, defend you post as you wish but when "California" shows up here at YT it far too often has something to do with the term "negative". I would think you would have a difficult time denying that. Same for New York, and of course city dwellers generally and those that vote differently or are concerned about the environment and the health of the planet. Those are always decisive comments for a great county like yours. I just don't get it, simple as that.

I don't know much about Big M groceries. If franchised it is up to the means and desire of the franchise holder to want to rebuild. All too often an owner is near or at retirement age so such an event often triggers an exit by that person. If corporate then the accountants take a look a feasibility and profitability as to whether to start over. Like I said the area is not the most prosperous when you look at the big picture and better times are decades into the past. Most grocery stores do not face a trigger type event to close. Profit erodes to the point where such a business closes and patrons have to find alternatives. The facilities there were ancient telling me there was not much money to use to modernize the location or build a new building.

"Big M" doesn't exist anymore except in name, really. They used to have stores all over NY and PA, in small towns. I think there were only two, now one, left in NY. Either the operators of the current stores were paying a small licensing fee to whomever currently owns the rights, or they were allowed to use the name in perpetuity after the company went bankrupt.

The only Big M I'm aware of that's still open is the one in Gates NY. Used to be one where I grew up in Warsaw, but it's now a Dollar General.

BUT I said nothing negative about California OR New York. Obviously those are trigger words for your negative perception. So sad.
