I am hooking up a 220 v compressor. The tank pressure control switch has two sets of double contacts. Two are marked (line load). The other two are marked (load line) Should the 220 v power in , go to the line load?

Are you definitely sure this is the exact wording, that “load” is in both labels? Echoing what wore out is saying “Line” and “Load” should be the identifying terms. Having “Load” in each label would not make sense. In actuality on a 220v AC double contact switch I doubt it would even make a difference. It’s not like it is a DC load where the arc potential is always directional.

I'm confused, two sets of doubles would be very unusual. I interpret that as a total of eight contacts, or is it four, anyway I can't picture that. Any way to help us out with a snapshot of the wiring? I'm with the others, one pair of wire connections, to one side of a double contact should be line, the other side should be load. But, I feel like I'm missing something.

wore out got it. For 220 you need to switch both sides of the circuit. Don't be confused by their positions. Two sets of contacts to make or break both sides. Mixing them up they would still work as long as one line and one load were connected on each side.

This is just how it is labeled. This is why I am a little confused. I always hooked up the supply voltage it the marked (line) Stan
 
In all my years of practice and even when a non professional amateur I considered Line as the hot incoming Supply voltage source and Load as the tool/appliance/motor that got switched activated when the relay toggled.

Also when using 240 volt appliances BOTH L1 and L2 were switched even though only one would stop operation

I doubt that has changed and it appears other electricians agree

I think you are confusing the words or reading them together.
The switch is marked
Line Load Load Line.
This is saying the line power in goes to the first screw
The load wire power to motor goes to second screw
The load wire power to the motor goes to the third screw
And line power goes to the forth screw.

Line is power in from your breaker box.
Load is power to the motor.

This is a very common way to wire this type switch with the motor hooked to the two center screws and the power in from fuse box to the two outside screws.
