Farmall C overheating.

Went out to do my first mowing job for this year. Farmall C started overheating after about half an hour. I took it home amid spent an hour with an air hose and blowgun working on the radiator. I never cleaned it up when I got done last fall, just parked it for the winter. I finally got it blown out enough that I can see light through the radiator. Then I spent some time cutting shims and putting them under the radiator mounts, so I could tighten the fan belt all the way, without the fan hitting the top of the shroud. It should run cooler until I later in the summer when stuff starts ripening and throwing off seeds a chaff to plug it up again.

I do all my brush hogging with my 300U and its later in the year when golden rod and rag weed are putting out pollen. My radiator is completely yellow when I get done. I have to blow out the crud a couple of times during the season.

Excellent start at air flowing through radiator. Also tighter belt . Oil the fan assembly if old orginal or replace it if sleeve bearing is shot with sealed ball sealed ball bearing .will possibly have to get longer generator belt .Keep working at it .
From experience that at our farm mowing and combining we use a fine mesh crude attachment screen over grill to keep most of the fins clean .
I’ll look for photo of the screen adaption and post it if I find it.
I use a garden hose to flush out the harden clay packed in the fine from tillage. I think pressure washer is too much pressure for old radiator.
Would hurt to put a commercial radiator flush cleaner through cooling system .
Ihc manual say to put baking soda in radiator every cspring ,see details in manual maintenance .

Later in the year, I will have a leaf blower handy when I am mowing. With the C I am using a side mounted sickle bar, so the radiator is up and away from the standing vegetation most of the time. Wi th the IH 350 and the brush hog I am constantly pushing the standing plants over with the tractor, and any fuzz and chaff gets drawn right in. I have a makeshift screen over the grill, but it doesn’t catch everything.

Makes sense , what you’re doing will help.
Another comment on flushing out tillage dust with hose , our loam dust gets wet and it will cake and dry ,so cake on fine loam is not good on the fin heat transfer . Alight blast with air hose helps to dislodge the dust . Keep it clean good maintenance.
