fence post versus come-along

Can I use a come-along to straighten a bent fence post? Or will the come-along be damaged? Maybe the come-along's cable will break?

The post has a T-shape, with sort of nubs along the face. I have one post that is bent and tree roots have grown in around the base, so I can't pull it up. If my come-along will straighten it, then o.k. Otherwise I will leave it as is.

You should be able to just bend it by hand to straighten it. But a comalong will work as well.

Find a tree fork close to the ground and put the bend up against one fork and an end against the other and bend it by pushing against it logically. You may have to reposition to get it straight.

You will only break the come-along if it is in poor condition (i.e. damaged, rusty, frayed cables etc.) or you're an 800lb gorilla, but if you're an 800lb gorilla you should have no problem grabbing the post and straightening it by hand.

Try pushing it with a loader.
T-Posts may snap off.

is it bent where it is grown into the tree? They are not that sturdy. I am old and wore out and I can grab one and bend it easily.

Even with one of those cheap come-a-longs, unless you are a world champion body builder or use a cheater pipe, you aren't going to break it using it as intended.

That post is what his commonly called a "T" post. If they are bent just a little you can usually straighten them by hand.

Well, after a few days, I got back to the fence post project; the come-along worked ok, the post is straight, nothing is broken, so I am a happy camper. thanks to those who commented!

Snapping the top off is always a possibility. I have hit several with my 6' shredder (rotary mower) mowing along a fence row and they have snapped. I have also seen them bent somewhat but never tried to straighten one.
