I have a 1961 fordson dexta tractor
The fuel tank needs to be cleaned and flushed. I want to setup an auxillary tank in the meantime to start and run the engine. My question is does the auxillary tank need to be gravity feed or can I use a tank with a pickup tube and primer bulb, like on an outboard?

The diesel Dexta's all had a lift pump, and I'm 80% certain the gassers did too (though I doubt you have a gasser, as they weren't too common). So I would say you should get along fine with a pickup tube style tank like a boat tank.

Mind you, a good fuel tank cleaning, even with the appropriate degreaser and acid wash steps should only take a few hours. By the time you set up the auxiliary tank and get it strapped solidly in place, I suspect you could have the old one clean and ready to go.

dont forget your diesel return to tank. and if the tank is mounted high enough then the hydrostatic pressure of the fuel is enough to run it. i also agree just work on the original tank.

I have had good results from just siphoning fuel out of a tank. You would need to have it half full to start to get it clean.
